As the series The McBee Dynasty: Real American Cowboys returned for its second season in June, fans were quick to notice that McBee family patriarch Steven McBee Sr. was nowhere to be found.

It was a stark change from season 1, which followed Steven Sr.’s work and home life as he ran his Missouri farm and various other businesses with his four sons, Steven Jr., Jesse, Cole and Brayden. Now, his eldest, Steven Jr., tells PEOPLE exclusively where their father has been.

“Our dad, it’s no secret, he’s going through the FBI investigation,” Steven Jr. says. “Just out of how delicate that situation is, it’s still ongoing and we’re hoping to have it wrapped up here before the end of the year, but just wanted to keep him out of any sort of public eye or anything, just until that situation is resolved. Just to protect him and protect our family.”

In November 2024, Steven Sr. pleaded guilty to falsifying documents to receive unauthorized insurance benefits. This ultimately cost the U.S. government more than $4 million.

He is expected to be sentenced on Sept. 9, 2025, and is facing up to 30 years in federal prison without parole.

Steven Jr. notes that his father still spends time with his family amid the investigation.
“He makes dinner four or five nights out of the week,” the Joe Millionaire: For Richer or Poorer alum continues. “Our entire family, including my mom [Kristi McBee], is over there at his house.”

“We’re all still enjoying family time together, love and support him and here for him through the entire thing,” he adds.

Additionally, Steven Jr. and his brother Jesse, who was also present for the conversation with PEOPLE, gave an update on how their father, Steven Sr., is currently holding up.
“He’s doing well. He’s focused on the grandbabies, focused on the family and that’s really where his focus has been,” Steven Jr. explains.

“The grandbabies have been really, really good for him, too,” he continues. “It settled him down, too. I think it’s softened all of us boys up a little bit.”

“He’s definitely the most positive person that we’ve ever been around,” says Jesse.

“He’s staying positive,” Steven Jr. adds.

The McBee brothers took on more responsibility running the family’s Missouri farm, McBee Farm & Cattle Co., ever since the season 1 finale.
In the dramatic final episode, after the company failed to secure a venture capital loan, viewers saw Steven Sr. make the shocking decision to step away and leave the farm in Steven Jr.’s hands.

“Jesse, Cole and I have really been running the farm and making the decisions, and my dad’s entrusted us to make those decisions. Things have been going well,” says Steven Jr. “I feel like we are in a better place now than we’ve ever been, maybe since the start of the company.”

Jesse adds, “Yeah, I honestly think so. And what we always say, we’re turning a cruise ship, not a Ferrari. But from the point where we were filming to the point where we are now, we’re, I think, way farther ahead than I even thought we would be.”

Steven Jr. also notes that they have “made tremendous progress.”

“Things have been really, really good,” he concludes. “Not to say we don’t have our challenges. We definitely do. Any farm and ranch does, but I feel better about where we are and how us boys are working together now than I’ve ever felt.”

While we may not see much of Steven Sr. personally this season (his dramatic love life is still playing out on screens!), Steven. Jr. teased on a June 10th appearance on Watch What Happens Live that his father may make an appearance. “You might just see him show up later on,” he said.

The McBee Dynasty: Real American Cowboys airs Mondays at 9 p.m. ET on Bravo, next day on Peacock.
