Resident Alien’s Cancellation Hurts, But the Series Isn’t Gone For Good
Resident Alien is returning with a new comic book adventure, which is great news for fans of the TV series who were devastated when Syfy announced that the show would end after its fourth season. Before it was adapted for the screen, Resident Alien started as a comic, and now the franchise’s original creators are bringing back Harry Vanderspeigle.
Resident Alien: The Book of Changes #1, by author Peter Hogan and artist Steve Parkhouse, is the ninth Resident Alien miniseries, and follows up on last year’s Book of Life.
Following The TV Show’s Cancellation, Original “Resident Alien” Creators Return With The Franchise’s Next Comic Miniseries
The first Resident Alien miniseries, Welcome to Earth!, was published in 2012, and since then, the comic has spanned thirty-four issues, while the TV adaptation starring Alan Tudyk lasted forty-four episodes. The Book of Changes continues the story of the comics, but it is still the next best thing to a continuation of the television show for fans of the Syfy series.
The first issue reintroduces the character Brad Jones, who previously appeared in the miniseries The Suicide Blonde and Your Ride’s Here, as he returns from space with a new group of alien characters in tow, who hail “from Harry’s home planet,” according to the synopsis for The Book of Changes #1.
The New “Resident Alien” Arc Pays Homage To The Franchise’s Roots While Setting Course For Its Future
Notably, the cover for The Book of Changes #1 is an updated version of the cover for the very first issue of Resident Alien. The original version featured Vanderspeigle, in his alien form, seated at a table in a diner with two human characters, as a waitress takes their order. The new cover features aliens in place of humans.
The clothes are the same, but the characters are extraterrestrials, with an extra alien added in the background for good measure. Further, an “S” is amended to the title, rendering it Resident Aliens, highlighting how much the series has developed since it began over a decade ago, and hinting at the direction this latest story arc will take.
Fans who already miss the Resident Alien TV series, now that it has been canceled, should check out the comic if they haven’t already. It is a quick, fun read, one that is easy to get caught up on in order to read along with The Book of Changes, as it takes the Resident Alien franchise to the next level.
