Patriots Captain Robert Spillane Shares Major Injury Update Ahead of the Super Bowl
he New England Patriots are gearing up for Super Bowl LX, which will see them square off against the Seattle Seahawks for a shot at being crowned the champion of the 2025 campaign. In the buildup to this game, Drake Maye has had the spotlight shining directly on him, thanks to a shoulder injury that led to him appearing on the team’s injury report last week.
While Maye’s status is certainly important, he seems to be on track to play against the Seahawks. A more serious situation worth monitoring involves starting linebacker Robert Spillane, as he was forced out of the AFC Championship Game early after suffering an ankle injury. Spillane’s status ahead of the Super Bowl appears to be up in the air, but he offered a big update on his injury situation ahead of the game.
Spillane was part of New England’s monster free agent class last offseason, as he signed a three-year, $33 million contract to play for head coach Mike Vrabel, who he previously spent time with while playing for the Tennessee Titans. When he’s on the field, Spillane has been everything the Pats were hoping for, as he racked up 97 tackles, one sack, two interceptions, five pass deflections, and one fumble forced in 2025.
The problem is that Spillane has been hit hard by the injury bug late in the year. He missed four games late in the regular season, and while he returned in time for the playoffs, he left early against the Broncos, which forced the Patriots to play without their top linebacker, who also serves as their defensive playcaller, for much of the afternoon.
Ahead of the team’s travel to San Francisco for the Super Bowl, Spillane did not participate in any of New England’s three practices last week, raising concerns about his ability to take the field for his team’s final game of the season. It appears to have simply been a precautionary move, though, as Spillane revealed on Wednesday that he believes he will be on the field for Super Bowl LX.
“Patriots LB Robert Spillane said this morning he’s confident he will play in Super Bowl vs. Seahawks despite ankle injury that left it in question,” Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network shared in a post on X. “Would be good news for New England to have their signal caller and force in the middle healthy.”

Spillane still has to make it through the next three days of practice without suffering any sort of setback, but it seems like it would take something major to prevent him from playing against Seattle. Nevertheless, Spillane’s status will be worth keeping tabs on ahead of the kickoff for Super Bowl LX, which is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET on Sunday.
