Patriots’ Quest to Re-Sign Key Offensive Lineman Receives Tough Update
The New England Patriots have been hard at work in the wake of losing Super Bowl LX. With several big-name free agents joining the team, the Pats appear well-positioned to build off of their breakout 2025 campaign. However, there are still several areas on their roster that need to be addressed before they return to action in 2026.
One area is the offensive line, where the team is currently short on depth options. While the team did well to sign Alijah Vera-Tucker in free agency, his injury history makes it important that New England is prepared in the event he misses time. The team’s top backup option from last season, Thayer Munford Jr., remains a free agent, but he’s recently received a unique update regarding his status on the open market that will catch New England’s attention.
A seventh-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Munford spent the first three seasons of his career with the Las Vegas Raiders. He emerged from seemingly out of nowhere in 2025 with the Pats, as he ended up becoming their sixth offensive lineman who would frequently find his way onto the field as part of the team’s jumbo formations.
Alongside Vederian Lowe, Munford was New England’s top backup at the tackle position last season. With Lowe departing in free agency, though, that has made Munford a more important free agent for the Pats. Not only was he effective in his unique role last season, but the team needs a guy who can come in and be their backup at the tackle positions.
And yet, there hasn’t been a ton of momentum towards a reunion between Munford and the Patriots. He was allowed to hit the open market, but to this point, he hasn’t found a new home. He could still find his way back to New England, but according to reports, it sounds like he is waiting to make a decision on his free agency, as he’s recovering from a surgery he underwent to repair a knee injury.
“Munford’s return is still possible, but that wouldn’t come until a bit down the road as a source said he’s recovering from surgery after playing through a knee injury,” Mike Reiss of ESPN reported.
Should the Patriots Re-Sign Thayer Munford Jr.?

Munford is an intriguing free agent. While he didn’t play a ton last season, he excelled in his role with the Patriots. That could lead another team to take a flier on him and give him more snaps, or he could return to New England, where he knows he’s going to continue being an important piece of its offensive line.
Before Munford decides on his future, though, he’s going to get healthy first. Whether or not that benefits the Pats or not is unknown, but it could impact their plans when it comes to their offensive line, as they may not be willing to wait on Munford to figure things out. If the timing works out, re-signing Munford makes sense, but New England should continue exploring other options at this spot in the meantime.
